“ラグビーの街“、釜石
その強さから「北の鉄人」と呼ばれ、日本ラグビーの歴史に偉大な足跡を残した新日鉄釜石ラグビー部。新日鉄釜石は昭和54年から昭和60年まで、V7を含む通算8度の日本一に輝きました。「北の鉄人」たちの誇りを受け継ぎ、2001年4月にクラブチームとして生まれ変わり、釜石シーウェイブスRFCとして再始動し、現在に至ります。
震災による大津波で壊滅した鵜住居小学校と釜石東中学校の校舎跡地を約５メートルかさ上げし、新しい釜石鵜住居復興スタジアムを今年完成しました。
今後釜石でたくさんの国内や国際的なラグビー試合やイベントが開催される予定です。
BBQ Park
せっかく釜石でラグビー試合が開催されても、地元の人々や子供たちにとって観戦チケットは高価なもの。たくさんの地元の人々や子供たちにラグビーの試合を観てもらいたい、という気持ちを込めて、パブリックビューイングの場所としてBBQパークを設置することにしました。また、国内外の多様性の溢れる人々が集い、交流を深めていける場所を提供します。
Blue Compassは、地元のボランティア団体の根浜MINDさんにバーベキューパークの企画や運営のアドバイスを提供し、協賛金募集などのお手伝いをしました。
＊根浜MINDさんは、東日本大震災で壊滅的な被害にあった釜石市の根浜集落にある旅館 宝来館の女将岩崎昭子が代表理事を務める団体です。釜石市の交流人口の増加を目指し、地域の活性化と持続可能な地域づくりに向けた活動を推進すると共に、人々の集う場、関係する人々のネットワークづくりを進めることで、人材育成を図り、未来に向けて希望のある地域社会を作り出していくことを目的としています。

2015年４月にリニューアルオープン。

“Rugby town”, Kamaishi
Kamaishi’s rugby team was so strong, they were known as the “Iron men from the north.” The Nippon Steel Kamaishi Rugby team left a huge footprint in Japanese Rugby, winnning 7 consecutive years from 1979-1985. In total, they became the Japan champions 8 times. In April 2001 the Kamaishi rugby team re-emerged as a club team, and currently plays as Kamaishi Sea Waves RFC.
The new Kamaishi Recovery Memorial Stadium was built by raising the ground 5m on the site of Unosumai elementary and middle schools. The schools were demolished in the tsunami of 2011. They plan on hosting many domestic and international games.
BBQ Park
Even when games are hosted at the local memorial stadium, the tickets can be too expensive for local children to attend. The local community decided to build a BBQ Park as a public viewing venue to bring together local children as well as people of diverse backgrounds.
Blue Compass provided consultation and advice on the planning and operating of the BBQ Park to local volunteer groups and Nebama Mind, as well as helped gather sponsors.
*Nebama Mind is a local organization headed by owner and “Okami” of Houraikan Inn, Akiko Iwasaki. Its member aims to increase the number of visitors to Kamaishi, develop talent locally, and build a sustainable community.
